BOOK SUMMARY: GOD AND THE TRANSGENDER DEBATE - CHAPTER 8 - LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Love is not optional for the Christian. Not loving others, means we aren't a disciple of Christ. Our neighbor includes anyone and everyone. See also 1 John 4:20. A lack of love other others proves a lack of love for God.  Loving God and others is the whole basis of God's Law (Mark 12:29-31). Love must be the foundation of how we interact with others--including those with gender-dysphoria or those who have embrace a transgender identity.  So what does loving others look like?

LOVE PROMOTES DIGNITY
All people are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This is foundational to the dignity of every person.  We all have inviolable worth and deserve respect. Nothing anyone can do can eradicate the image of God in them. All classes of people, both genders, all sinners possess dignity. Failing to grasp this results in abuse, i.e., Nazi Germany, African slave trade, abortion, etc. We ought not to mock those who claim to be transgender people or abuse them. We ought to hate it when they are bullied. Though we disagree with their sinful choices, we ought to care for them.

LOVE REQUIRES EMPATHY
We need to try and see things from other people's perspective to build relationships with them. Empathy doesn't mean agreement.

Tim Keller said, "You cannot help with a burden unless you come very close to the burdened person."

Have we made genuine efforts to understand people who struggle with gender-dysphoria? Just because their struggles are foreign to us doesn't mean it's ok to mock or not to try and understand them.  Instead of rejecting people outright, we ought to make an effort to listen and seek to understand.  People struggling with gender-dysphoria may attend our churches, be in our families or show up in the workplace. Are we going to act shocked or disgusted or will we realize God has given us an opportunity to love, listen, understand and share Christ.

LOVE SHARE TRUTH
See 1 Corinthians 13:6.   Love rejoices in truth.  We cannot send unbelievers signals of approval of their sin.  How do we love our neighbors with gender-dysphoria without giving approval of living in a gender opposite of their sex?

Western culture says that love approves of what others do that makes them happy.  Scripture says that love speaks truth.  We cannot affirm every desire of others when those desires run contrary to God's Word. We must share the Word.  Though we love, the world will not perceive it as love.  It's not popular to share the truth of God's Word. It will be labeled as "hate speech". We'll be seen as bigots. To affirm that transgender ideology is true is to be unloving and to agree with lies.  Yet it is still possible to share the truth in an unloving and self-righteous way. We need to guard against that.  Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Speaking truth in love requires relationships, prayer, love and compassion.

LOVE PRODUCES COMPASSION
It's easy to scoff at those who experience gender-dysphoria or who accept this ideology.

Colossians 3:12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

As Christians we often get defensive when the world's notions encroach upon us.  We attack back sometimes, but must learn compassion.  How did Jesus respond to prostitutes or those who were fornicating?  Was he shocked? Was he grossed out?  Did he laugh or mock at them?  Absolutely not.  He brought grace to them.  He was compassionate.  Jesus' "woes" were for the self-righteous. Compassion doesn't mean approval, nor does it mean silence.  Compassion sounds like this: "I want you to know that I may not agree with you, but I will never look down on you.  You are loved."

LOVE HAS PATIENCE
Compassion means you're confident that the kindness of God in you will help lead a person to repentance.

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient and kind, love does not envy or boast, it is not arrogant.

There are believers, not just unbelievers, that struggle with gender-dysphoria. This may go away, and it may not.  There are sins and things we still struggle with even though we are saved.  It's arrogant and self-righteous to act like we don't have our own struggles while condemning people with their struggles.  That's why sympathy, empathy, compassion and patience are necessary.

God has been compassionate to us. Isn't that what drew us to Him? The gospel is grace and compassion. Why do we think our smugness will win others to Christ? God has been patient with us. He is still patient with us. No rebellion, ours or others, is enough to put us out of reach of God.

We are not here to win arguments. We are here to love people. So we must be patient with those who hate the gospel and disagree with God's design for gender.  We are to display the likeness of God to those who need Christ. We will not gain a hearing by being self-righteous, arrogant, compassionless, impatient or crude to sinners.

FACE TO FACE
In an age of social media, it's easy to attack others when we don't see them face-to-face. Loving relationships requires face-to-face interaction.  Those with gender-dysphoria or those who agree with this ideology are real people who believe God's blueprints are wrong.  Our struggle is not with them...it's not flesh and blood. They are not the enemy. The church at large really needs to rise up to the occasion and carry a mature mindset, a mature love, a mature commitment to be like God when building relationships with sinners of all sorts.

BOOK SUMMARY: GOD AND THE TRANSGENDER DEBATE - CHAPTER 7 - A BETTER FUTURE

The question is asked, "What if you are born into a female body, know you are a man, and still want to participate in the traditionally exclusive rite of womanhood (childbirth)? What kind of man are you then?

The answer is, "You don't break free from the effects of the fall (feeling like you are born in the wrong body) by following the course of the fall in your own life and decisions (attempting to transition into another gender).

According to Scripture, anyone struggling with gender-identity issues has hope just like the person who struggles with envy or depression.  2 Corinthians 5:17 says that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come. We can become new creations.

As new creations we begin to experience now what we anticipate in the future--a fully restored creation, a time when dysphoria is replaced with euphoria of every kind. As new creations we understand why the world is the way it is and we embrace the One who will fix it all.  Though we live in a fallen world, we walk towards the new world.

WAITING FOR FREEDOM
Romans 8:18-25 reminds us what is to comes--the restoration of creation and the redemption of our bodies. This is final redemption.  Redemption is the act of being set free. We will be freed completely from bondage and corruption.  This has begun already and will be consummated one day.  Along with the world, we groan because all is not well.  But our groan is not eternal.  We groan with hope. The conditions that give rise to gender-dysphoria will be eradicated. Yet it may be that someone with gender-dysphoria struggles with this their whole life. Final redemption is future not now.

THINKING CLEARLY
One way to deal with this struggle is to think correctly and clearly.  Romans 8:5-6 teaches that fleshly people think in fleshly ways--the ways and thoughts of the world. Spiritual people think according to the Spirit--the ways and thoughts of God. To set one's mind on the flesh is death.  BUT to set one's mind on the Spirit leads to life and peace.

The Spirit helps us know how to think right even if our feelings tell us otherwise. Thinking according to the Spirit may make life harder because you have to battle the fall and sin instead of running with the flow of it. Romans 12:2 commands us not to be conformed to the world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.  God re-orders how we reason.

A CHANGE OF HEART
In Ezekiel 36:26-27 we have the promise of the New Covenant. God will give us a new heart, a new spirt, the indwelling Holy Spirit, and He'll cause us to walk in His ways.   A heart of stone is one that loves anything more than God. A heart of flesh is one that is alive to God and truly desires to love and obey God.  There's still a struggle with old desires but new desires help us to battle sinful tendencies.

If someone struggles with gender-dysphoria but is made new in Christ then they'll eventually be able to see things God's ways. The struggle can still be there but it won't define them. Their identity is as a child of God. Scripture will equip us on how to handle wrong feelings and thoughts.

A BETTER FUTURE FOR OUR BODIES
Revelation 21:1-4 gives us the hope of a new creation. In this new creation we will have new bodies--free from the fall in every way. The former things will pass away.

Philippians 3:20-21 tells us that we are waiting for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He will transform our bodies to be like His glorious body.

One day all our physical, mental and emotional ailments will be gone. Our thinking will be correct, our emotions will always be right and our bodies will never deal with sickness or death again.

JESUS IS THE WAY
Read Romans 8:1-4.  In God sending His Son for us. In Christ we are free from the law of sin and death.  Jesus was condemned in our place.  He fulfilled the righteous law of God for us.  If we continue life apart from God and live according to the flesh, all that remains for us is more misery.  We will not receive God's eternal blessing of restoration that enables us to live with Him forever.  Apart from Christ we remain dead in our sin and under the wrath of God. Our tears will not be wiped away.  Resurrection life, found only in Christ, is the cure to every problem we have or will have. Abundant life is found in Him alone.

TRANSFORMATION
One day Christians will experience total transformation. The only hope for any sinner is Christ.  We can tear up God's blueprint and suffer the consequences, or we can yield to Him, trust Him to save us and await final redemption. The perfect life, death and resurrection of Christ is powerful and will delivers us if we turn to Him as Lord and Savior.

Read Romans 8:18. The present sufferings we experience can't compare to what is coming for us! Let us look to Christ continually.

BOOK SUMMARY: GOD AND THE TRANSGENDER DEBATE - CHAPTER 6 - BEAUTY AND BROKENNESS

God created Adam and Eve for a while they lived in harmony.  Then they sinned after listening to Satan who cast God's rules as restrictive. The wisdom of Satan seemed right for why would denying someone pleasure and enlightenment be wrong. Eve's decision was supported by her feelings. Even her husband agreed.  This is our story, too.  We are tempted to rule our own lives. We want to be autonomous. We don't believe God knows best.

THEIR STORY AND OUR STORY
Adam and Eve's choice was one of alternate Lordship.  This put all of creation under God's judgment. We have followed suit (Romans 3:10-11, 12, 18).  This is our story as well.  Therefore, we cannot point a self-righteous finger at those who disagree with us about gender-identify.  We all are rebels.  We all sin differently.  As a result of Adam and Eve's sin they felt ashamed and uncomfortable with their own bodies.

A BROKEN STAGE
Humanity was the pinnacle of creation so it should shock us that Adam's sin affected all of creation (Genesis 3:17-19).  Creation is comprehensively broken. Work was hard yet fulfilling but is not hard and often frustrating and futile.  We are broken beings that suffer cancer and depression and a host of other things. We die because (Romans 6:23) and we face an eternity outside of Eden and God's presence.  The affects of the fall are not just outside of us but within us.

WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR HEARTS
We cannot trust all the feelings and passions within us. Our hearts are not pure (Jeremiah 17:9, 1 Peter 2:11).  We are deceived into thinking that we cannot be satisfied in life unless we indulge in all our desires. And it's these desires that cause us to fight with others. This is self-evident since prisons are full of people who acted on impulse and desires. They followed their hearts and passionate desires.  Thus our hearts desires can want what is actually bad for our hearts.

People with gender dysphoria experience real feelings and real passions.  This is not something to joke about. It is not something to mock.  But having that feeling doesn't mean it is right to act upon it. Internal peace is not found in going beyond God's limitations He's placed on us.  People who undergo sex-changes are not reported as having higher levels of happiness post-surgery.  Genesis 1-3 show us that embracing feelings and thoughts contrary to God results in life that is less happy and fulfilling.

GENDER DYSPHORIA IS NOT SINFUL
There's a difference between an unwanted feeling and acting upon it.  Eve didn't sin because Satan tempted her. She sinned when she acted upon that temptation.  In the same way, gender dysphoria refers to the mental distress a person experiences as a result of their false perception that their biological sex is wrong. There may or may not be a sinful root cause for those feelings or perception, but the distress itself is not necessarily sinful.  The experience of gender dysphoria is evidence that all of our lives are affected by the fall.  It is sinful when we let our feelings rule our actions and affections.

THINKING IT THROUGH
It's not just our feelings and actions that are affected by sin. Our logic and mind and reason are tainted by sin as well (Ephesians 4:17-18).  Without God our logic is flawed. We need the Creator to understand His creation and our humanity.  Our mind and hearts work together. Our heart might desire one thing but our mind might tell us that this thing is bad for us. Sometimes our minds try to justify what our heart wants. This is why an atheist can be clever and blind. He uses his bright mind and logic to reject God because his heart's desire is to reject God.  Our minds attempt to tell our hearts whether our feelings are reasonable, but we cannot always be sure that our mind's reasoning is valid.

CAN A MAN CHANGE HIS HEIGHT?
It is absurd to affirm every feeling that someone has about their identity.  If someone feels that they are not valuable and that their life is not worth living, would you affirm that?

THE WAY WE'RE PUT TOGETHER
Physical pain is part of life ever since the fall (Genesis 3:16-19).  From conception onward, no one experiences life in this body in perfection. Our bodies, feelings and minds are all subject to the fall and thus subject to pain and suffering.  So technically we are "born this way" but that doesn't mean we are supposed to act upon our sinful predispositions.

THE BLUEPRINT PERSISTS
God has not given up on His purpose for humanity. He does not just let us rip up the blueprint.  Eve in the fall, God did not allow Adam and Eve to fully get their way. He still ruled over them.  Humanity can want genderless humans or gender fluidity, but God has not allowed it. We might attempt to change our form, but our formatting has been set by God. It is fixed and unalterable in our DNA. Transgenderism, therefore, is not a real thing because our gender can never change.

The person who feels morally superior and self-righteous to the person with gender dysphoria is feeling sinful things that they must not act up. Feelings of superior righteousness and self-righteousness are deceptions from the heart affirmed by the mind since Scripture says "there is none good. No, not one." That is not to say that we should affirm a person's desires and feelings or actions.  We must affirm God's righteous way of thinking, feeling and acting.  That is not self-righteousness.

WE ARE NOT LEFT WHERE WE ARE
Our bodies, minds and hearts are beautifully broken things. But God has not left us to remain broken. Genesis 3:15 teaches that a Savior would come to restore us.
