Athanasius explains why the Word (the Son) became human.
Repentance alone could not fix the problem because repentance does not reverse
corruption—it only stops new sins. Humanity needed someone who could restore
incorruption and uphold God’s truthfulness about death.
Only the Word who created everything could recreate
humanity. So the Word took on a human body, entering creation in a new way.
Athanasius emphasizes that the Word did not merely appear; He took a real human
body from a virgin so He could truly die and truly rise. By living in a human
body, the Word broke the power of corruption—like a king entering a city and
driving out its enemies.
