Exodus 13:2, Job 5:13 and Amos 5:25-27 are little known passages that the NT authors quote in Luke 2:23, 1 Corinthians 3:9 and Act 7:43. What is their purpose in quoting them? This is the point of this book.
This topic matters because the OT was written for us. Romans 15:4 reminds us not to forget former instruction. The things that happened to Israel were for our instruction (1 Corinthians 10:11).
The NT authors regularly cite and use the OT. For example, each of the 4 gospels started off with pointing us back to the OT. You can't understand Hebrews without an OT understanding on many fronts. There are anywhere from 300-400 quotes or allusions to the OT in the NT.
Teachers of the word of God must model a proper understanding of the OT. If we model the "only scholars get this stuff" approach then it will rub off on people and they will be discouraged. If we model the "this is for us and this is exciting" approach then it will rub off as well.
