HOT TOPIC: PRAYING FOR YOUR PETS
But let me ask you this, suppose you were a farmer who’s livelihood depended on the health of your livestock. Would you pray for the health of your animals then? Of course you would because they provide a financial benefit to you.
But most pets don’t provide an income for us. But do they provide other benefits like companionship and laughs. Form some of us they act as feet warmers at the foot of our beds during those cold winters months. What a perk of being a pet owner. But aside from these benefits, we are called to care for God’s creation. It's part of the mandate God gave to Adam in the beginning of Genesis. Thus a good steward should provide physically for their pets well-being. So why not acknowledge that this provision is first and foremost from God. Isn’t that proper? Matthew 6:28 says that God feeds the birds. Surely God cares for all the animals He has made, not just humans.
If God clothes the lilies and the grass in glory, then we know He loves and takes joy in caring for creation. So it only stands to reason that it’s ok to bring creation before God and ask him to bless it or to lighten the effects of the fall on creation. This is part of good stewardship and our dominion over creation—we seek God’s assistance.
Knowing that creation longs for redemption according to Romans 8, just like we do, it’s perfectly commendable to pray for the little creatures that God gives us to take care of—creatures that bring us much happiness, companionship and even warmer feet on cold nights.
